Given that XP is perpetually updating drivers across the board, plus itself - it would be a hard case for them to argue. Also as CCC is required to use an advertised feature (the s-video out) that would leave only a very short leg to stand on. But given Rock's reputation and proven track record, plus the nature of gaming laptops and their users I'd be utterly gobsmacked if they refused to support you.
EDIT: Also noted that Rock Direct are specifically listed under the Supported System Integrators... section and the ATI downloader will check your PC for compatibility first. I also noticed that there is a line in the "known problems" regarding use of PowerPlay so it must be available in 6.1. |

Mobility Catalyst 6.1 installed, nice and smooth. PowerPlay is present. I left everything running in the background and all ATI settings stock and ran 3DMark03.
On AC I got my best score to date - 4944.
With PowerPlay enabled and battery setting to Optimal Performance - it was dire, my worst ever score, less than 1800.
With PowerPlay disabled the AC score returned to normal, unlike with the Omega drivers, and the battery score was just 100 points down on my best AC score.
There did seem to be some stuttering on battery but in all this is a positive if small step, but I'm still missing 800 points somewhere.
EDIT: Astronut, if you install 6.1 can you try it without .NET first, if it works OK I'll be able to remove it from my machine - cheers. |

I just installed mobility drivers 6.1 and I've discovered that you will have to leave .NET v1.1 installed as the Catalyst Control Centre will not work without it.
http://www.rockforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=58471#58471
Re. these missing 800 points (don't forget to factor in your CPU speed in any comparison with other scores) and the stuttering: did you follow the instructions on tweakguides.com ATI Catalyst guide for correct installation of drivers, etc. It is always best to completely remove previous versions before installing newer drivers using Driver Cleaner Pro (follow instructions supplied in the help file with this app carefully) and RegSupreme to remove any traces of the old drivers.
It can cause problems like reduced frame rates, stuttering, etc if you just install over the top of old drivers.
Of course the stuttering could just be down to the settings used in the control panel, etc - again, follow the tweakguides.com ATI guide instructions.
The guy who wrote this guide mentions stuttering and it's cure on page 7.
<quote from guide>
"The method you choose is up to you, but by disabling all the unnecessary .NET Framework Accounts/Services, all the useless ATI Services and startup items, and the Control Center system tray entry I was able to return my system's memory usage back to what it was before I had installed the Control Center, and more importantly my gaming performance returned to normal, without the stuttering which had begun after I had installed the ATI Catalyst Control Center. It really is ridiculous that a driver package takes up over 100MB of extra RAM just to provide a little bit of additional functionality, and I'm truly hoping ATI continues to refine the package to become a bit more streamlined."
</quote>
PowerPlay tab is now available - mystery solved. |

I've been trying out different ATI drivers (except omega) all day now and to cut a very long story short I've finally settled on the latest 6.1 mobility drivers with Catalyst Control Centre.
I've discovered something important regarding the Powerplay tab and the advice on tweakguides.com about services so here's a heads-up.
One of the services he advises disabling is ATI Hotkey Poller which is something I always do on my desktop.
<quote from guide>
"The ATI Hotkey Poller service is only needed if you use the ATI Hotkey settings available in the ATI Control Center (See ATI Control Center section below). If you don't use these (and most people don't) you can safely double-click on this service and select 'Disabled' under the Startup Type box. However, if you have an 'XT' type ATI graphics card, then disabling this service can also disable the OverDrive section in the Control Center. Therefore I recommend that if you run an XT card, you should leave this service on Automatic, otherwise set it to Disabled. Further, if you run a laptop with an ATI graphics card, you may need to keep this service enabled to allow your LCD screen to switch off when the laptop is closed."
</quote>
Now I've found that last bit about the lid closure isn't a problem on my Peg650 when the service is disabled but it's something to be aware of.
Remember that services aren't truly disabled until the next reboot after setting them to disabled so I checked that the screen turns off with the lid closed as it is supposed to after disabling the service and rebooting - no problem there
I have found however that disabling this service causes the bottom slider on the PowerPlay tab (Low Battery) to disappear so consider this a warning if and when you start tweaking. .

SNAP!
Just finished going through TweakGuide and I've posted my best ever score - on BATTERY power, would you believe, and I have at last broken the 5000 point barrier. It may not seem like much but it's all moving the right way.
I've got to say I like CCC 6.1, best results yet, seems stable and installed like a dream. My Hotkey Poller is off too, again no problem with the lid turning off the screen but as you said the bottom slider on PowerPlay has gone walkabouts. As I've disabled PowerPlay I'm none too bothered.
Ps. Now it's gone midnight - Happy Birthday to me... |

| I cant believe how much difference there is on 3dMark03 between battery and AC power on my XCT. I was expecting a difference but was quite surprised at the amount of difference 15207 down to 1834!! |
