Installed SUSE 10.1 from DVD in a dual boot config along side Windows XP Home.

However, now whenever I boot into either Windows or SUSE, the Sony DVD RW is just not there.

Found a Mepis forum entry from somebody with a Clevo-based Sager laptop who describes exactly the same problem.....and the likelyhood that it is a BIOS issue

http://www.mepis.org/node/10817

Has anybody else experienced the same problem.... with any Linux distro ???

Update: Tried to boot SUSE Linux 10.1 Live CD, but this failed spectacularly with the following error:

init: Cannot find the CD I was booted from - doh !
(Need to mount this CD/DVD to /.CD.real)

So it looks like SUSE 10.1 and Clevo M57U based laptops are mutually incompatible Crying or Very sad

This problem is caused by GRUB torquing your BIOS. Yeah, I know, sounds implausible, but that really is the case.

Use LILO (or any other bootloader for that matter) and the problem will go away. Including the "BIOS BUG" warning that you're seeing the in output of dmesg.

I posted a more complete response in the mepis forum that you mentioned. Check it out if you want.

Good luck!
